Dorothy Chapman Josey was born and reared in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  She received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from University of Georgia in 1975.  After a 20-year hiatus from art, she continued her studies in the fall of 1995 at Converse College under Teresa Prater and Doug Whittle.   She has also taken numerous workshops from Graham Nickson, the Dean of the New York Studio School, where she has also attended several Marathons.  And took a landscape painting course with West Fraser.

Dorothy is the former Deputy Art Director of Time Magazine cover art.  She worked at Time from 1981 till 1988.  Her work there allowed her to work with artists as varied as Robert Rauschenberg, George Segal, David Byrne, Marisol, Alex Katz, Robert Longo and many others.

Her oil paintings are in the Johnson Collection, the Spartanburg Public Library Collection, the Wofford College Collection, the Episcopal Church of the Advent and the Gibbs Cancer Center.  Her cover art for the book “Hub City Anthology 2” won a national award.

She lives and works in Spartanburg on a farm in the country with her husband. She has two college-age daughters.
